Book Review: Her Own Happiness

Hey, I’m so glad we are back together for another book review. It makes me happy that we have the freedom to come together for something we all have in common, books. Without further to do, grab your tea or coffee and join me bookworms as we begin our book review.

Today’s book is called, Her Own Happiness by Eden Appiah-Kubi. First I want to admit that I did what we are all told not to do. I judged this book by its cover. Yes you read that right! I don’t normally do that, but in this situation I did the opposite of what I believe in. I love going to bookstores for my books, sadly sometimes I don’t have the time to do that. What I will do instead is search the internet for new or used books that I want to read. This particular book was purchased from Amazon. I typically read the summaries listed in the description to determine what books to buy. Not this time. Instead I saw the beautiful cover of this book and allowed the colors and the character’s picture to draw me in. Staring at the cover I noticed how the contrast of colors complimented the characters picture. What a beautiful choice of color and design.

The second thing I took notice to was the authors name. I don’t own many books from brown or black people so that sold me. Reading the books description finalized the decision to purchase. I ordered the paper back version of this book and couldn’t wait for it to come in the mail. When it finally arrived I opened the package and began reading, drinking in every word as if it was the natural spring of life.

The story around the main character, Maya, focuses on rebuilding and growth as she was placed in a situation that was beyond her control. This took Maya on a journey as she tries to find herself. Can anyone relate to that? I know I can. I thought this book was a very down to earth relatable book. It was enjoyable and a light fun read.

A cool thing that the author, Appiah-Kubi, did in this book was display the text messages the characters were having on their phones in bubble format right onto the pages for you to read. Doing this turned those particular pages into a cell phone screen giving you full access to Maya’s text messages as if you were right there. This technique actually engages the reader by drawing them in further. Doing this also made the story line easier to follow.

I think the author did a great job with this book and I am interested in getting her other book, The Bennet Women. Have any of you read it or heard of it before? I hear from reviews that it’s a modern version of Pride and Prejudice. That automatically makes me want to read it so it’s on my TBR list.

After reading the book I wanted to learn more about the author so I googled her. I promise you I’m not a stalker. I needed to know more about who she was as a person. Greenbelt Online (www.greenbeltonline.com), wrote that Eden Appiah-Kubi is an Alumna at a small university in New England and now lives in Greenbelt where she works as a librarian. I can’t tell you how happy I was when I read that she is a librarian.

Bookworms this book is a great read and I highly recommend it. I love that the author is a librarian and I loved that I found this gem. Be sure to read, Her Own Happiness by Eden Appiah-Kubi.

Stay safe and I’ll see you next time. Take care.
