Series: Olivia’s Stories

Episode 5 summary:

In episode 5 we learned more about this young man’s health and the type of treatment he was receiving from the hospital. Was he going to live or die? That part we hadn’t found out yet.

Episode 6:

The patient was unconscious so what I was about to do he wouldn’t know but would he feel it? Sure, there’s a chance he would still feel it. Each patient is different, and I knew that soon enough the nurse and I would know if he could feel pain. The nurse had finished hanging his blood and was now checking the patient’s blood pressure manually. I lifted the patient’s gown exposing his naked bottom region. I spread his legs and opened my kit, prepping the items for use. With my sterile gloves on, I used a sterile technique to clean the tip of the penile area. Next, I took the clear tube in the kit, rubbed it in the lubricant, and then inserted it into the penis. The patient tightened up but there was no verbal response. “That’s a good sign.” The nurse told me from her computer on wheels; she turned her back to document in the patient’s chart. 

It wasn’t too long after the transfer team showed up to take the patient to the trauma hospital that had accepted him. I packed up all his belongings including his cut-up clothes. The patient was placed on the team’s transport monitor as I disconnected our monitor from him. He was placed on the transport team’s litter and whisked away. My last duties pertaining to that room would be to gather all the medication that was not used along with cleaning up all the biohazard items before housekeeping entered the room. Once housekeeping performed their magic, the room was ready for the next patient.  

When you work in an emergency room, it’s rare to find out what happened to a patient you care for. Sometimes the family or the patient themselves will mail a card to the ER explaining how they are doing and thanking the staff for all their efforts. Most of the time you don’t know what ever became of that person. Now, local nurses with experience typically have worked at other hospitals or doctor’s offices in the area. The benefit of that is that you meet people in these workplaces and make friends. And friends talk. With that being said, here’s his story.  

The patient was driving the vehicle when he approached a red light. The road he was on was a two-lane going in the same direction. The car that pulled up in the next lane was a rival. Words were exchanged and gun fire erupted between the two cars. The light changed and the cars stayed side by side shooting at each other which explains the bullet holes all over the black BMW. The driver (who later became a patient in my hospital) couldn’t aim and drive. The passenger of the second vehicle was able to aim and hit its target. It was all over territory for drugs. Who can sell drugs on the block and who can’t. When the driver couldn’t drive anymore and slumped over, the car was guided to the side of the road by the passenger in the car. A male friend of his that sold drugs with him was also in the car. The driver’s girlfriend was in the backseat. The girlfriend and friend moved the driver to the backseat with the girlfriend while the friend drove the car to the emergency room. Once they arrived at the emergency room door, the driver got out of the car and ran. He had warrants and knew the hospital would call the police. The patient did end up surviving and from what I was told he now uses a cane that he will need for the rest of his life.
