Hauntings of 17Hundred90 Inn

The 17Hundred90 Inn is a hotel currently located at 307 East President Street in Savannah, Georgia. The name of this hotel came about because in 1790, Savannah had its first ever voting system for a mayor and city council after the American Revolution (Google AI, 2026). 17Hundred90 Inn is one of the oldest restaurants in Savannah that provides fine dining and sleeping quarters (1790restaurant.com). As with any other building this old in Savannah, the building is haunted. The first ghost we are going to talk about is a bit complicated. Anna is her name, and she comes with different variations to her own story.

The first variation of Anna’s life and death says that she was married to a man named Steele White. Anna White, loved her husband dearly and was devastated when he passed away in 1823 during a horse riding accident. It is said that the grief was unbearable for Anna causing her to kill herself.

This story has all the elements of a traditional ghost story with the exception that there’s an issue with the story. When, Steele White, died, Anna, moved to the Isle of Hope, which is located south of Savannah (US Ghost Adventures, 2022). Anna lived there with her family. Anna couldn’t have killed herself at the inn because she moved away.

Another variation of the story states that a family purchased the building in 1888. The woman’s name was Anna Powers. Mr. Powers added to the main building which included adding balconies. Some people wonder if the ghost that is seen in the inn is this Anna.

The last version says that Anna was engaged to a sailor who did not love her the way she loved him. Some say she jumped from a window because she knew he didn’t love her. Anna didn’t want to be left in a loveless marriage. Others say she was pushed out the window by the man she thought loved her just the same.

The history in Anna’s story is not clear. No one can confirm which story is actually Anna’s and which is not. The part of the story that can be confirmed is that Anna’s ghost does exist and can be seen at the 17Hundred90 Inn.

Anna’s ghost story is not the only ghost story associated with the inn. Perhaps this next one you may find a bit more disturbing. This ghost is nameless but is known as the Not-So-Friendly-Kitchen Ghost. All that is known about this ghost’s past is that it is thought she was a Voodoo practitioner. The ghost stays in the kitchen. She’s a bad ghost that doesn’t like women. This ghost has nasty habits of throwing pots and pans, she pushes people, and pranks the females that work there.

When women are alone in the kitchen they say they can hear the ghost moving around the kitchen. The spirit will make banging sounds and slam cabinets. The employees think the spirit was of a servant who once worked for the owners of the home. No one knows why the ghost is so angry or why she doesn’t like women but employees say you should watch your back while you’re in or around the kitchen of the inn.

Then there is Thaddeus, a boy ghost that is seen sometimes in the restaurant. Witnesses say he leaves pennies on the tables and at the bar for guests to find. Unlike the kitchen Ghost, Thaddeus is friendly. Guests and employees a like have said that they’ve felt warm spots leaving them feeling comfortable.

The 19Hundred90 Inn is not the last of Savannah’s Ghost Stories but one of many more. If you love ghost stories be sure to google Savannah’s haunted past to search and read about many more true ghost stories.
