Episode 5:
As we waited for a response on who would accept the patient from the trauma hospitals we called, treatment on the young man continued. His blood pressure was low, so the doctor ordered saline with a pressure bag around it to help the fluids move quicker into the man’s veins. His EKG looked normal with the exception it was beating a bit slower than normal. The blood work that was done on him was starting to come back, and his hemoglobin was low. From there, the doctor ordered a blood transfusion and a CT scan. He wanted to make sure there was no internal bleeding.
One of the doctors walked around the bed counting each bullet wound. They were everywhere. I wonder what happened that someone decided this person needed to be filled with bullets. CT called and they were ready for the patient. I grabbed the transport monitor off the code cart and applied the pads on the patient quickly. From there we headed out of the room and down the hall towards CT.
We were out of CT and back in the patient’s room in about ten minutes. I disconnected the transport monitor and placed the patient back on the wall monitor while the nurse prepared to give the patient blood. The doctor stood outside the room talking to two police officers. The nurse asked me to get a foley kit while she hung the blood. Out of the room I went walking past the two officers that were talking to the doctor and into the stock room just a few feet away. Quickly I returned feeling as important as I looked. I could’ve been carrying a life-saving device for all those two officers knew. I could feel their eyes on me as I moved quickly back into the room. And for good measure just to make sure I looked as important as I wanted to feel, I poked my head out the room and told the two officers and the doctor that we were going to perform a procedure, and I was shutting the door for privacy. I told them I would inform them when we were done and when they could come in. With that, the door was closed.
